I, Albert Beveridge, am a Senator from Indiana who served from March 4, 1899 to March 3, 1911. I am one of the biggest advocates of American Imperialism, and I full-heartedly support the annexation of the Philippines. We as Americans, being the chosen people of God, should spread democracy to other countries in need. It is our moral duty to convert these barbarians living under Spanish rule into upstanding citizens. One of the most crucial factors is the benefit to our economy. The Philippines would secure a foothold in the Chinese economy, granting us new consumers for our products.
As a young Republican Senator of 36, I was the most vocal about annexing the Philippines. I traveled to the Philippines to see it first hand, and it is America's job as a rising world power to seize this opportunity of beauty and resources. Since we control some of the most important commercial and military bases of the eastern seas, it would be foolish to abandon the opportunity to be so close to China, India, and other rich land. It has been the essential ideal of America to continue expanding west, and we should not let the Pacific Ocean interfere.
